Schools and Families
Anderson Island Elementary is a small public school with modern educational tools, quality staff and small class sizes, providing individualized instruction for students kindergarten through fifth grade. Anderson Island Elementary receives a high B+ rating from Homefacts. The Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) standards test rated Anderson students at proficient or better levels in math, 75% above state average for reading and 83% above average for writing! Well done students, teachers and parents!
Older students are transported daily by school bus and ferry to nearby Steilacoom to attend Pioneer Middle School and Steilacoom High School. Extra-curricular activities for older students require some additional coordination on the part of families, but numerous community sports and recreational opportunities are also offered on the island. Visit the Anderson Island Park District website for more information. http://www.andersonislandparks.org/Programs.html
Students also participate in group nature hikes, the raising and releasing of salmon, working in the school garden and ample other opportunities not as readily available in the city, such as observing birds, deer coyotes and other fauna abundant on the island. Anderson Islanders feel they have greater parental and family influence in the rearing of their children on the Island and value safe neighborhoods free from many of the negative influences more common in the big city.
